Marine chronometer H. Hughes & Son N°14930 A fine quality 56 H marine chronometer by this important maker of precision horology. The 3-tier brass edged and lined case has sunken brass handles and signed plate to the middle section. The high quality 56 H movement is contained within gimbals in a deep bronze lacquered brass bowl and has a silvered and engraved brass dial bearing the maker’s name and series number. The beautifully spotted fusee movement has a spring-detent escapement and compensated balance. Henry Hughes, London, was working in Fenchurch Street between 1868 – 1941. The company was started by Thomas Hughes who sold a chronometer to Captain Bligh of the Bounty in 1780. Brief Bio: active 1828-1947, marine & aeronautical navigational instrument maker, London.
