A ship's bottle is a miniature representation of a ship enclosed in a glass bottle, serving as a decorative object.

Very common in the twentieth century, these representations were often the testimony of a sailor who wanted to show his entourage the ships on which he had sailed. The lighthouse keepers also used to make boats in bottles, or in used bulbs of the lighthouse.

The difficulty consists in bringing a sailboat with its sails through the neck of a bottle, and that is what justifies the high price demanded of it. A common deception is to cut the bottle to place the boat, then to reassemble the piece by concealing the cut by an ornament, like a rolled rope.

The sailboat is assembled on the outside, all masts and shrouds are folded horizontally. The hull and its rigging are introduced into the bottle, and deployed inside with a string connected to the masts.

The ships in the bottle are made by navibotellists. The latter portray boats in a maritime environment and many other subjects - even without boats - but always inside a glass vessel with narrow opening.
